The Breaking Apathy Series
Civic Engagement Early.
The Breaking Apathy Series is a set of annual events meant to teach elementary school students the value of civic engagement. It was created in the hopes that by giving our youth the opportunity to learn about civics early in life we will create a generation of students who are civically engaged by the time they reach adulthood. The border community has struggled with voter and civic apathy for years, and this initiative is meant to make a tangible change in the attitude of future voters.
Breaking Apathy Events.
The Breaking apathy series originally started in 2018 with Constitution Day, in which high school volunteers visited local elementary schools and used skits, arts and crafts, and reading activities with 3rd and 4th grade students to teach them about the Constitution. Since its creation it has branched out to include Election Day, Thanksgiving, Veterans Day, and MLK Day. The elementary school who have participated include the following:
- Polk Elementary
- Western Hills Elementary
- Tippin Elementary
- Myrtle Cooper Elementary
